Most dogs need a bath every 4-6 weeks, but the ideal schedule depends heavily on their coat type, lifestyle, and skin health.Long or silky coats (like Shih Tzus or Maltese) benefit from a bath every 3-4 weeks to prevent mats and tangles.Curly or wired-haired coats (like poodles or terriers) often need a bath every 1-3 weeks.Double coats (like Huskies or Golden Retrievers) need fewer full baths every 2-3 months because frequent washing strips their natural water-resistant oils, though they require regular brushing.Factors That Change the Schedule:Activity Level: Dogs that swim in lakes, roll in the dirt, or play outside daily need more frequent washings.Skin Conditions: Dogs with allergies or infections may need specific medicated bathing schedules prescribed by a veterinarian.
Yes, dog hair can contribute to clogged home plumbing Here’s how it happens: Hair doesn’t dissolve easily. Dog fur can travel down the bathtub or shower drain and become trapped in the drain or pipes. It catches other debris. Once hair starts accumulating, soap scum, shampoo residue, dirt, skin oils, and other debris can stick to it.The buildup grows. Over repeated dog baths, that combination can form a dense blockage that restricts water flow.Heavy-shedding dogs can make it worse. A large or double-coated dog can release a substantial amount of loose fur during bathing.Clogs can eventually require plumbing work. A severe blockage may need to be snaked or professionally cleared.
